5th graders recently combined creativity with Science as part of our food chain unit! Students designed and illustrated their own food chains, showing how energy transfers through living things—from producers like plants, to consumers like animals.
Students explored how all living things depend on one another for energy and survival. They identified roles such as producers, consumers, and decomposers, and demonstrated how these parts work together in an ecosystem and how some animals are actively contributing to many ecosystems, playing varying roles.
This project connects to South Dakota 5th grade science standards by helping students understand that:
➡️ Energy in an ecosystem starts with the sun
➡️ Plants make their own food (producers)
➡️ Animals rely on other living things for energy (consumers)
➡️ All organisms are connected in a system
I love seeing students bring science to life through art while building a deeper understanding of the world around them!

Come on down! We are set up and ready to go! We start serving at 5pm.

Seventh grade science has been learning about the three different boundaries where tectonic plates either separate, collide, or slide past each other. To model the effects of this movement, students used marshmallow cream, chocolate, and graham crackers to represent the magma, oceanic plates, and continental plates. After modeling, the students got to enjoy some messy and tasty s'mores.
